Job Description
A maximum 8 week hybrid position, including up to 16 nights of dormitory
accommodation on Mount Hamilton and transportation expenses to enable one
highly-motivated student (aged 18 years or over), nominally resident in
the San Francisco Bay Area and/or adjoining counties, to have an authentic,
rewarding, stimulating, inspiring experience, embedded in an astronomical
research/observatory environment, featuring hands-on experience with
spectrographic, imaging and adaptive optics instruments.
Position Duties:
The successful applicant shall participate in well-defined projects,
mentored by the Observatory's resident staff astronomers, largely
exposing participants to observatory operations, including
scientific research,
instrumentation,
observing,
software engineering/programming,
technical writing,
mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering.
Participants shall be expected to participate in Public Education/Outreach
initiatives, including the Observatory's Summer programs:
Requried skills, knowledge and abilities:

Participant(s) shall be required to be in compliance with UC policy
(e.g. coronavirus vaccination and mitigation policies).
Preferred skills, knowledge and abilities:

Computational skills (e.g. programming; data management;
basic use of Unix/Linux-like operating systems).

Understanding of astronomical coordinate systems.

Participants are expected to be in possession of a valid US
driving license.
Recruitment process shall commence late March 2024/April 2024, with a
view to the internship running for an 8 week period within the interval
mid-June to mid-September (coincident with summer recess periods at the
majority of third level academic institutions in the hinterland of Lick
Observatory). Applicants shall be required to complete a questionnaire to
gauge their expectations and skills. Quite possibly, further conversation
(in the form of an interview) with applicants may also be engaged in.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute a total of 176
hours on a half-time/flexible basis over a maximum duration of 8 weeks.
Thanks to financial support from the Friends of Lick Observatory,
the 2024 internship derives a total stipend of USD 3448.00.
This stipend shall be disbursed in two installments: A first installment
of USD 1724.00 on commencement and a second installment of USD 1724.00 on
conclusion of internship.
