        Donna DeEtte Elbert (1919-01-27--2019-01-2019).
        Chandra's computer and secretary.
        consisted of using a desk calculator to numerically solve the
        mathematical formulae that Chandra produced. Other part 
        typing manuscripts and correspondence.
        Co-authored 18 papers with him and did numerical computations for
        many more, as well as typing papers and correspondence. 
        In 1979 Elbert moved-on to become office manager for the 
        University of Chicago astronomy department.
        Did not have a university degree.
        Graduate of Williams Bay High School.
        Chandra included Elbert (and other "fulltime conputers" on papers 
        for which they did unusually large amounts of numerical work.
        Elbert became an outstanding numerical computer (at Yerkes).
        Worked with Nobel-winning astrophysicist Subramanyan Chandrasekhar 
        for over 30 years (1949--1979). Originally a computer, Elbert 
        was co-author with Chandrasekhar on multiple papers.
        Complex magnetic fields of planets. Link between rotation and magnetic
        fields, convection cells organize into larger scale patterns instead 
        of smaller, turbulent ones. 
        Insight about when magnetic and rotational forces are roughly 
        equivalent: the Elbert range.

        Summer 1956: 6 weeks in New York to ttend design school.
        1960: U Wisconsin, Madison summer school mathematics.
        4 summers in Madison taking art history and calculus courses.
        Eventually completing BFA in art.

                        Responding to the demand within the UC Astronomy
                        community, in 2023, Lick Observatory shall host
                        <b>two</b> Observational Astronomy Workshops,
                        intended to provide an introduction to 
                        observing. Workshops are open to entering and early 
                        program University of California graduate students.


                        The first of these, Honoring Maud Worcester Makemson, 
                        took place during the second 
                        quarter of 2023: a 6-day Workshop between 18 and 23 
                        May 2023.

                        The second shall take place during the fourth 
                        quarter of 2023: a 6-day Workshop between 18 and 23 
                        October 2023.

                                 thanks to a donation from UC Irvine 
                                 astronomy professor, Virginia Trimble,
                                 allowing UCO to defray most, if not all, 
                                 expenses.

                        Workshops are delivered by the Lick Staff 
                        Astronomers with the support of all Mount Hamilton 
                        residents and UCO administrative staff. 
                        Workshops feature 
                        hands-on 
                        observing 
                        experience with 
                        the Kast spectrograph on the Shane telescope,
                        the Hamilton spectrograph on the Coude Auxiliary 
                        Telescope (CAT), and direct imaging with the 
                        Nickel 1-m reflector. Additionally, the Workshop
                        promises introductory lectures, interactive 
                        observation planning sessions, rewarding 
                        experiences as well as valuable networking 
                        opportunities embracing the whole of UC Astronomy.

                        be exploited to deliver much of the curriculum.
