Computer Setup

This section details the setting up of the computer to interact with the network and telescope.

NOTE: The procedures in this chapter are for initial setup of the gemini system and will not have to be done by the observer.

  1. Log in to cafe and start the Gemini version of poco, poco_s_gemini.
  2. Start the Gemini version of the guider software on redeye1.
  3. Log in to shard as user and start shane_serial.
  4. Start the gemini.exe code by typing gemini /licktcs from any directory.
Interfacing with the telescope allows the Gemini software to give move commands to (TELMOVE and TELPOSN) and receive limited error messages from the telescope control program POCO. The user can interface with these features by using the gemini menus or command line.

The default setting is to have the gemini code interrogate POCO for RA and DEC just before each FITS file is written to our hard disk. If you do not want auto-writing of coordinates to the FITS headers, just shut the feature off in the gemini Engineering-TCS Setup menu.

Telescope moves are made by using the Setup-Telescope Move menu or by typing TELMOVE XX YY at the command line, where XX and YY refer to RA and DEC offset in arcseconds.

Occasionally, an error message is immediately returned from Telco before the telescope is finished moving. In all cases where this happened, the telescope went on to successfully execute the move. The only caveat is that the user should not clear the error dialog box in the gemini program until the telescope is finished moving (as indicated in the telescope operators POCO GUI). Clearing the error message too soon could result in the next command, e.g. a GO, in a script being executed while the telescope is in motion.

Offset limits are +-115 degrees in RA and +-1 degree in DEC; these limits are measured cumulatively from the last telescope slew, i.e. you can't get around these limits by moving a bunch of consecutive little offsets which add up to more than the limits. Offset rates are about 60 arcsec/second at the equator in RA and 30 arcsec/second in DEC.
