| On April 29, 2000, San Jose participated in the 30th annual
Earthday celebration with a fair held at the Arena Green near downtown San Jose.
Lick Observatory was there to promote the use of astronomy-friendly, energy-efficient,
low-pressure sodium lamps (LPS). LPS and other smart lighting practices help astronomers
by reducing light pollution and benefit the environment by saving energy.
Visitors to the Lick booth could don spectrum glasses and see first hand the
differences between LPS and other types of lighting. Everyone
left with a pair of his or her own special Lick glasses, a copy of the Observatory's
new brochure on Lick and Santa Clara Valley lighting, and, we hope, a heightened
awareness of the importance of smart lighting.
