The Telescope: New Telescope Drive (R. A. and Dec)

NOTE: THIS SECTION SUPERSEDES SOME OF THE INFORMATION PRESENTED PREVIOUSLY

The telescope is now driven by stepping motors in both right ascension and declination (RA: 1 step = 0.344 arcsec, Dec: 1 step = 0.27 arcsec). The motors are controlled by the octagonal paddle described in Telescope Motions and by switches on a control box mounted on the head roughly 90 degrees to the right of the eyepiece. In both coordinates there is a choice of track or drift (fast track) rates, three selectable guide rates, and one set rate. The guide rates are controlled by the N-S-E-W buttons on the paddle and by the F-M-S (fast, medium, slow) selector switches on the control box. The set rates are controlled by hitting the N-S-E-W buttons plus the center button on the paddle. The R.A. track rate can be adjusted with the buttons on the side of the paddle. The drift rates and the dec track rate are adjusted with pots on the control panel.

The rates are approximately as follows:

Rates (arcsec/sec)
ModeR.A.DecNote
Drift4-620.2-9
Track12-200.06-0.8(fast)

0.006-0.07(medium)

0.0006-0.008(slow)

4*4(medium)

2*2(slow)
* Relative to sidereal rate.

The Master Switch and the R. A. preload switch in the office must be turned on.
