The Telescope: General

The Crossley is a 36-inch prime focus reflector with an English equatorial mounting. The telescope tube may be on either the east or west side of the polar axle. The "normal" configuration is with the tube on the east side, which is assumed in what follows unless otherwise specified (frontispiece). The nominal scale at the prime focus is 38.6 seconds of arc per millimeter, f ratio 5.8.
