Hamilton Spectrograph User's Guide

Detector Characteristics

As of this writing, three CCDs are available for the Hamilton. Follow the links for technical specs and tabular QE curves.

  • Dewar #6 (thinned 2048x2048, good QE, good cosmetically)

  • Dewar #8 (unthinned 2048x2048 LBNL high-resistivity, good QE, low charge diffusion, subject to particle events)

Comparative QEs of Dewars #6, #13

N.B. Dewar #8 curve shown on plot below is for a CCD that is no longer in use. Chip currently in dewar #8 is not shown on these plots. QE is comparable to or better than #6 but other characteristics differ.

N.B. Dewar #6's curve is for the "old" device in that dewar, but is similar to that of the new (February 1998) device. For the precise QE curve of the new CCD, follow the "Dewar #6" link above.

N.B. Dewar #13 is no longer available

If you're not sure about which chip to request on your time application, chip to request on your time application, contact a support astronomer, Elinor Gates (egates@ucolick.org) or Bryant Grigsby (bgrigsby@ucolick.org).
