Lick Observatory Lightning Photo
8 September 1999
In a one-minute time exposure looking west from Kepler Peak, a turbulent cloud hurtles lightning into Mt. Hamilton foothills. Across shower-drenched Silicon Valley, more bolts shock the Santa Cruz Mountains twenty miles away. Domes are closed for the duration, shielding telescopes from the assault.

The Great Lick Refractor (Classic)
Named for the eccentric benefactor entombed beneath its pier, the Lick 36" Refractor was the most powerful telescope on the planet when esteemed astronomer James Keeler wrote in an 1888 issue of The Engineer: "Even the habitually frivolous become thoughtful when they enter the presence of the great telescope."

The Great Lick Refractor (Observing)
The Lick 36" Refractor was the world's most powerful telescope when it saw first light in 1888. Its focal ratio of f/19 is ideal for observing the moon and planets in our solar system. Sometimes used for scientific study, it also inspires visitors with views of the celestial tableau during
summer programs, tours, and other events.

3.5" x 2.5" Magnet $4.59
4" x 6" PostCard $0.69

The Shane 3-meter Reflector (Classic)
The Shane 120" Reflector was second largest in the world when completed in 1959. The 145-ton telescope remains a leader in forefront technologies, including Adaptive Optics and Laser Guide Star. Its precise spectrograph excels at finding planets that orbit distant suns. The 120" serves astronomers from many UC campuses.

4" x 6" PostCard $0.69

The Shane 3-meter Reflector (with Laser)
The 12-watt yellow sodium laser creates an artificial "star" 90 kilometers above the ground. Light from the laser guide-star is analyzed by sophisticated optics at the telescope. This allows instant real-time correction for atmospheric turbulence, and yields precise celestial images that rival those from space telescopes.

The world's first mountain-top observatory and America's first big-science research center, Lick Observatory exemplifies astronomy's dramatic development in the past century. A dedicated Confederate naval officer and his jack-of-all-trades foreman used the bequest of a miserly California eccentric to transform an isolated mountain peak into the world's premier research observatory. Its first staff included a director from West Point and three of the outstanding astronomers of their time. Since its dedication in 1888, Lick Observatory has been the site of many of the most important discoveries in astronomy.

Eye on the Sky presents Lick Observatory from the point of view of the people who breathed life into its giant telescopes. Their community was both constant and constantly transformed, shaped by workers famous and unknown who made it their home. The authors also explain in terms anyone can understand the laboratory advances that were adapted to telescopes to make them more powerful, and the conceptual breakthroughs that discoveries at the telescope helped bring about.

The men and women who went to the top of Mount Hamilton in search of greater knowledge of the skies helped to change our conception of the universe and our place in it. They were people with personal and political lives as well as scientific careers, and their story illuminates a time and a place where foundations were laid for the discoveries of the next century.

This award-winning video takes you behind the scenes of one of the world's great observatories. The story of Lick Observatory begins more than 100 years ago when the aging James Lick, an eccentric, self-made California millionaire, decided to leave behind him the world's greatest telescope. In 1888, a dozen years after his death, Lick's dream became reality with the completion of the first permanently occupied mountaintop observatory. Lick Observatory has been at the forefront of astronomical research ever since.

Enjoy an insider's tour of Mount Hamilton's major telescopes, from the Great 36-inch Refractor, to the famous Shane 120-inch Reflector. Hear Lick's astronomers and astrophysicists talk about the Observatory's remarkable accomplishments - from early discoveries to modern day research and technology.
